I did consider a failed timeline, but I didn't want the story to be too depressing! Have you ever noticed that in time travel fics there is often loads of warnings for those who dare? Lots of warnings to not mess too much with the timeline, don’t tell the past folks about what happens in the future etc. I find the idea that a change made in the past doesn’t quite make the future as intended fascinating. I mean really what are the odds that you would do the exactly perfect thing to ensure the ideal future? A billion to one? For example Snape may have thought bringing together Hermione and Draco in the past would have nudged them into becoming a couple/happily ever after. Would this have somehow resulted in him not being paralyzed? What did his arthmancy calculations show? Instead Hermione went canon. It kind of reminds me of the saying “be careful what you wish for” It takes a bit of the sugary coating off a supposedly happily ever after ending. Which makes a better ending in my opinion.
In that case, finding the hair would be devastating, and would give the Legilimency an extra, guilty, dimension... Agreed. Making Snape’s actions all the more self sacrificing. Also this would take some of the shine off ever perfect Miss Granger. Its all to the good.
