Sometimes, if you only look at the surface of Draco's characterization, you wouldn't think he would do something so selfless...but considering how Draco felt about those closest to him IN CANON, and how he reacted to his own life's stressors, it's so surprise that he would not only want to save face, but also protect Harry.
